A leash is a leash, right? You would think so, but in today’s ever-expanding pet supply market, dog owners have endless options to choose from.

I’ll admit, I used to just buy whatever looked cute and seemed durable. It wasn’t until I started using the Quantum 6-in-1 Leash from Kurgo that I began to consider the functionality of that little piece of rope between my dog and me. Read on for my thoughts, experiences, and opinion on Kurgo’s Quantum Leash.

OVERVIEW OF KURGO’S QUANTUM DOG LEASH

The Quantum 6-in-1 Dog Leash is, as the name implies, an adjustable and multi-functional leash for your favourite furry friend.

Using a simple webbing ladder design and carabiner clip, the leash can be used as a:

  • Standard 6-foot leash
  • 3-foot training leash
  • Courier style leash
  • Waistbelt leash
  • 2-dog leash
  • Tether

The leash’s adjustability makes it an attractive, multi-use option for dog owners who don’t want to carry multiple leashes and tethers for various purposes.

Kurgo is a Vermont-based dog gear company that makes everything from harnesses, seat covers, carriers, backpacks, leashes and much more. They offer a lifetime warranty and support organizations that help dogs through their Kurgo Foundation Fund program. You can learn more about the company here.

WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW I’VE TESTED THE LEASH

I first bought the Quantum 6-in-1 leash on a whim from a local pet store because I was looking for a waistbelt leash, and it was the only option they had. I ended up finding it so functional that I bought a second one when we got Gus. We have been using these same leashes for 2+ years on our two dogs – a German Shorthaired Pointer and a Vizsla, both high-energy medium-sized dogs who like to pull. They each weigh in around 55lbs.

Our Kurgo leashes have been used for daily walks, training classes, backpacking, hiking, camping, and road trips. They came along on our multi-day backpacking trip on the Saltery Bay Loop and crisscrossed western Canada with us as we road tripped to B.C. and back. They have a lot of miles on them.

Out of the six possible functions, we mostly only use three of them – the standard six-foot leash, the waistbelt leash, and the tether. I haven’t found much need to use it as a three-foot leash, and I found the courier style felt awkward for me (though I could see how that would be useful as a hands-free option that allows for quickly slipping the leash on and off). The two-dog configuration is another one that could come in handy with dogs who walk well on leash. Unfortunately for us, Gus and Izzie seem to always be going in two different directions, so it ends up being a bit chaotic when they’re on the same leash.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE HONEST

THE GOOD

My favourite thing about the Kurgo 6-in-1 leash is how quick and easy it is to adjust. The carabiner simply clips into the webbing loops along the length of the leash, which means it can go from short to long to waistbelt to tether within seconds. It takes a little bit to wrap your head around how/where to clip the carabiner to change the configuration, but once you have that down, it takes no time at all.

Being able to tether and use it as a waistbelt without having to unclip the leash from the dog’s collar is another huge bonus. This is especially appreciated when we’re beside a busy highway, or in a campground with enticing wildlife, or anywhere else that a loose dog could be a disaster. It allows you to keep control while transitioning, which keeps the dog safe and secure. The reflective strip along the leash’s length is also a great safety feature for late-night walks.

For our more outdoorsy pursuits, the tether option is so so so handy. The leash can be looped around a tree, park bench, picnic table, bike rack, or any other stationary object it reaches around. This lets you set up a campsite, cook a meal, or re-pack your disaster of a road trip van while the dogs are safely chilling out. The waistbelt style is great for hikes and backpacking trips when you want your hands free to check a map, eat a snack, or scramble up a steep section of trail.

When it comes to durability, our two leashes have lasted quite well considering the amount of use they’ve had. Our first leash had one metal grommet come loose early on, but it hasn’t impacted the functionality of the leash. We also had the clip on a carabiner twist, which made it difficult to keep it closed, but we were able to bend it back and get it in good working order again. The webbing has frayed a bit, but again, it has not affected the performance of the leashes. Our dogs like to pull, and we’ve used and abused these leashes in just about any kind of conditions you can imagine. Overall, I’ve been impressed with their lasting power.

Kurgo does have a lifetime warranty, so any minor issues like those mentioned above should be taken care of. I have not felt the need to go through the hassle of returning the leashes for things that weren’t stopping us from using them, so I cannot speak to the quality of Kurgo’s customer service or warranty process.

THE BAD

Aside from the few small issues mentioned above (broken grommet, bent carabiner clip, and slight fraying), I haven’t had many problems with the Kurgo leash and don’t have a lot of complaints about it.

In terms of design, the floating padded handle cushion seems unnecessary. I removed them from both our leashes quite quickly and haven’t used them since. I believe they are meant to add comfort to the handhold when using it as a standard leash, but I found it mostly just got in the way and added one more thing that needed to be adjusted when switching uses. I don’t find the leash uncomfortable to hold without them, so I don’t miss having them there.

I have also found that, when using them as a standard leash, the carabiner occasionally manages to slip around the entire leash rather than just the webbing section it was initially clipped to. When this happens, and the dog pulls, the carabiner will slide up the length of the leash and pinch your hand. This happens very, very rarely and isn’t enough of a problem to stop me from using the leash, but it’s a slight annoyance worth noting.

THE HONEST: IS THE QUANTUM 6-IN-1 DOG LEASH WORTH YOUR MONEY?

The Kurgo Quantum 6-in-1 Dog Leash generally retails for between $25-$30 and based on the amount of use we’ve gotten out of ours, I would say a big old ‘YES’ to the question of whether or not it’s worth your money.

The only small caveat to this would be that if you have an exceptionally small dog, the weight of the leash may be a bit too much for them. Also, if you’re someone who would have no use for the leash’s multiple functions, It likely isn’t necessary.

But, if you like to adventure with your dog, I would highly recommend the Quantum leash. The ease of use and multiple functions are so useful when you’re out on the road, the trail, or on a run. And, as someone who tends to pack more for the dogs than I do for myself, I always appreciate having multi-use items that can lighten the load a bit.
